“LIGHT WITHIN THE SHADOW”
About This Artwork
In many African communities, the appearance of a black cat has long been wrapped in superstition. It is often whispered about as a messenger of misfortune, a companion of witches or a sign that something unseen walks nearby. Fear, stories and inherited beliefs have shaped how the creature is perceived. In this painting, I step into that cultural tension. At the center of a vibrant, almost spiritual explosion of color sits the black cat quiet, still, and watching. Around it, layers of fiery orange, red and gold collide like fragments of human belief. stories passed from elders, fears carried through generations and the constant human attempt to explain the unseen. But something unexpected happens in this composition. Instead of darkness consuming the cat, it is surrounded by light. The warm tones suggest a divine presence. an atmosphere where light exists even around what people fear. The cat becomes less of a symbol of witchcraft and more of a mirror of human perception. Is the darkness within the animal or within the stories we attach to it? This work marks my first time painting an animal and I chose the black cat deliberately because of its powerful symbolism in African culture. I wanted to confront the idea that what we often label as mystical or dangerous may simply be misunderstood. The cat sits in stillness, almost like a silent philosopher in the middle of a spiritual storm. It does not defend itself against the myths surrounding it. Instead, it exists calmly inside a field of divine light. And perhaps that is the real question of the painting: What if the things we fear are simply waiting for us to see them in the light?
